Newcastle Upon Tyne. Privately Printed. (By Mawson Swan & Morgan). c..
31p., plus 5 plates (inc.frontis portrait, in full dark blue calf, spine titles on the upper cover, original shipping wrapper folded and loosely inserted, first edition, limited to 65 copies, bound with: Set of 11 card mounts containing the 164 hackles described in the text, in the original full dark blue leather folding drop-back Solander box, the 11 mounts are twice cupped (the actual defection is up to 1cm is depth), causing some twisting on the box side of the case, there is no damp staining anywhere, probably indicating a unusual reaction to normal humidity, the one other copy we had previously there was slight plate warping, - all specimens are present. Gingrich pp287-288. Litchfield 75; Kerridge 79. Baigent was the first to understand the importance of using a hackle and how it reflects light (colour) as opposed to the artificial material. See Gingrich. The limitation is variously described at being between 40 and80 sets. Note: because of the plastic cover it is nearly impossible to photograph these plates because there is so much bounce back. The picture does give an indication of the curving on these plates. The one other copy we had did have some plate curving as well, which may indicate the curving is common to this special edition.
