Williams, 5 etched plates by George Cruikshank), bound in full cross grain crimson calf, gilt decorated raised bands, gilt center panels decorations and borders, gilt spine title, wide gilt and blind decorated paneled boards, edge decoration on the edges and inner gilt dentelles, a.e.g., expertly restored, a fine attractively bound copy (tgc) A finely bound reprint of Christopher Anstey's best known work. Originally published in 1766, it was an immediate success and was enthusiastically praised for its original kind of humour by Walpole and Gray. The book consists of a series of letters in anapaestic verse, describing the adventures of the "Blunderhead Family", at Bath, and depicting the manners of the place and time with much good humour and drollery. This edition has significant additions about Anstey and Bath by the English antiquary, John Britton (1771-1857) and delightful etched plates by George Cruikshank.
