Appleton & Co., 1852.,  8vo, 23.5cm, 1p., with 8 very large folding engraved maps, these large fragile maps have been professionally expertly backed, cleaned, restored and rehinged, (requiring 14 hours), rebacked in the original blind decorated cloth boards, gilt titles on the upper cover, fine and rare thus (cgc) A series of detailed typographical maps pre-pared under the direction of Maj. J.G. Barnard, U.S. Engineers, Chief Engineer of the Tehuantepec Railroad Company of New Orleans, Louisiana. A proposal in response to the Mexican government granting foreign concessions for a railway, 192 miles long, to span the Tehuantepec isthmus in the 1850's. In 1882, the Mexican government resolved to build the railway itself but it was not finished until 1907 under British contract. The primary map measured 42x 16 inches; The other seven maps detail portions of the area, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific coasts.
