Originally published in 1844 the editor was O.L. Holley. This appeared to be an revised and expanded editon, (with 15 plates rather than 10). The preface is signed by J.D. and does not mention Holley. Sabin 62693 (under title). Not in T.P.L. or Waterston; cf. T.P.L. 7745 for 1844 edition and cf. Sabin 32538 & Lande s1079 for Holley, 1844 edition.

[i],310,265p., with 6 folding maps, 7 photographic illustrations on 4 plates, appendix (on the Lady Franklin Bay expedition), proceedings and appendix indexes, rebound in black cloth, paper label, fine thus, rare A.B. 18416. The Proteus and Yantie under Army and Navy command respectively made up the relief expedition of 1883. The Proteus was lost in Kane Basin, and the instructions issued for the undertaking were not altogether followed. These proceedings of the inquiry show the organization, outfitting and general conduct of the expedition, with voluminous documentation in the appendix, covering letters, instructions, and journals relating to the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition.

The American edition has been revised by Daniel P. Kidder - ". this picture of the Tahtar tribes is brought to the fire-side of American readers . to compare the condition of the Eastern nomades with that of the aboriginal Indian tribes of our own country." With an interesting inscription: "Presented to John McDonald for his diligence while attending the Presbyterian School in Collingwood. Rev. Robt Rodgers Jan. 1866".

(cgc) By Mayer, Augsutin, Baron von Meyerberg, (1612-1688). First French Translation originally published in Latin in 1668. The author, a German diplomat, was sent as an envoy by the Emperor Leopold I to the Court of Czar Alexei Michaelovitch in 1661 to re-establish peace between Poland and Russia. Mayerberg, together with his colleague Calvucci and seventeen attendants, experienced great difficulty in obtaining entry into the country. Once there, they were prevented from all external communication, finally being allowed to return to Vienna in March of 1663. His account of experiences contains much useful information on seventeenth century Russian manners and customs.
