(mt). - A remarkable record of over 500 equipment bridges built by the Royal Engineers between D-Day and the end of the war. "The task of crossing all the rivers from Normandy to Berlin viewed in advance seemed a formidable one. Those rivers include amongst others the Seine, Meuse, Rhine, Ems, Weser and the Elbe, no to mention canal systems of the Low Countries and North Germany. 21 Army Group on the left flank of the Allied Armies had to cross all those river nearest to their mouth and, therefore, where they were widest.".
