The Montreal Star.,  1898]. 21.5cm, 136p. illustrated title repeated on the front wrapper, many text drawn illustrations, tape stained upper cover laid down on plain stiff wraps, spine cap wanting, printed on very fragile paper, a very good copy, rare The Montreal Star claimed that the Carleton Place Doctor, who attempted to establish a new and somewhat bizarre religion/occultism, had defrauded at least one southern U.S. family of $5,000. This resulted in one of the most interesting libel suits of the 19th century which was held before Sir William Meredith in Perth, Ontario.

At the time it was not understood how the disease spread nor how to treat it. Six thousand people were believed to have died.

Born in 1910 in Eganville in the Ottawa Valley, the doctor specialized in pediatrics eventually becoming Dean of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. The John F. McCreary Health Sciences Centre was named after him in 1979.
