Elkannah Billings, (1820-1876), palaeontologist, was born in the township of Gloucester, Upper Canada. He was educated at th e St. Lawrence Academy, Potsdam, New York, and in 1843 he was called to the bar of Upper Canada. He practiced law in Bytown and in Renfrew; but his ch ief interest was in biology and natural history, and in 1856 he was appoint ed palaeontologist to the Geological Survey of Canada. Early in the same ye ar he issued the first number of the Canadian Naturalist; and for the rest of his life he was a voluminous contributor to Canadian scientific literatu re.
