He joined the Canadian militia as an artillery subaltern in 1898 and from 1899 to 1901 he saw service in South Africa, in D Battery of the Royal Canadian artillery. As well, he served throughout the whole of the first Great War, and from 1916 to 1919 he was general officer commanding the Canadian artillery.
